WHY WORDS MATTER

The surprising truth about your everyday words

Hey friend, Hi!

Can we talk about something that stopped me in my tracks recently?

I was reading “The Liberty of Our Language Revealed” by Thomas Blackwell, and here’s what hit me: The words we use aren’t just describing our reality – they’re actually creating it.

Stay with me here because this isn’t just another “think positive” message. This is about something deeper.

Think about it:

  • Ever caught yourself saying “I don’t have time” when really, it’s about choices?
  • Or how about “I’m not ready” when you’re actually more prepared than you realize?
  • Or my personal favorite “I should have…” when you’re doing the best you can?

(I’m raising my hand over here because, guilty as charged!)

Here’s what blew my mind: These aren’t just words we’re tossing around. They’re actually shaping how we see ourselves, our capabilities, and our future.

The Real Cost of Our Language

You know that inner voice that drives your day? Turns out, it’s doing more than just commenting on your life – it’s actually directing it.

When we say things like:

“I don’t have time”

“I’m not ready”

“I should have…”

We’re not just describing our feelings – we’re actually programming our brains to look for evidence that proves these statements true. (Mind-blowing, right?)

READ THAT AGAIN!!

Your Power Shift Instead of: “I don’t have time”

Try: “I’m choosing how to use my time”

Instead of: “I’m not ready”

Try: “I’m prepared enough to begin”

Instead of: “I should have…”

Try: “I choose to…”

Permission to Speak Life

  • “I give myself permission to…”
  • “I choose to…”
  • “I am capable of…”

This Week’s Reflection

Take a moment to think about the words you use most often. Pick one phrase that might be holding you back, and consider:

  • How does this phrase make you feel?
  • What would change if you chose different words?
  • What truth do you really want to speak into your life?

Remember: This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being intentional with the words that shape your world.

Think about it – what if changing your language could actually change your life? (Because, according to the research, it absolutely can!)

XOXO

Tonya

P.S. I’m curious – what’s one phrase you’re ready to let go of?
