“I believed this advice for 20 years (it nearly broke me)” 😳 ❌

The BS We Keep Telling Ourselves

“Just put your head down and work harder.”

…But at what cost?

Hey friend, Hi!

I’m just going to jump right in here…can we talk about the most dangerous piece of advice in business today?

You know the one I’m talking about…

“Just put your head down and work harder.”

It sounds innocent enough, right?

Maybe even inspirational.

After all, hard work is how you got where you are today.

This well-intentioned advice is actually the silent killer of your joy, creativity, and even your success.

The Cost of “Head Down, Work Harder”

Think about it:

  • When was the last time your best idea came while grinding through your 14th hour of work?
  • Have you ever solved a complex problem by just “pushing through” when your brain was already foggy?
  • Remember that relationship (personal or professional) that flourished while you were constantly “too busy”?
  • How many health warnings has your body given you that you’ve ignored in the name of “pushing through”?

Ouch, right? But here’s the thing – you’re not alone. And more importantly, you’re ready for a better way.

The real cost isn’t just in missed dinners or forgotten birthdays. It’s in:

Your physical health: Those headaches, that persistent back pain, the sleep troubles—they’re not just “part of getting older.” They’re your body’s rebellion against the grind.

Your mental clarity: Remember when you used to have those brilliant insights? That creativity that set you apart? It needs space to breathe, not more pressure.

Your relationships: The quick “sorry, can’t make it” texts have added up over the years, haven’t they? The connections that once energized you now feel like one more thing on your to-do list.

Your legacy: Is “she worked really hard” really what you want people to remember about you? Or is there something more meaningful you’re here to create?

Why This “Advice” Is So Dangerous

This “head down, work harder” mentality isn’t just outdated—it’s actively harmful.

Here’s why:

It creates a burnout cycle. When “working harder” is your only tool, you’ll use it for every problem… until you simply can’t anymore.

It blinds you to opportunities. When you keep your head down, you miss the connections, innovations, and moments that often hold the real solutions.

It feeds the perfectionism beast. That voice saying “just a little more effort and it’ll be perfect” is never satisfied. Never.

It disconnects you from your why. Remember why you started your business? Those dreams get lost when you’re constantly in the trenches.

The Generational Work Trap

Here’s something that might hit home:

Gen X (that’s us) was taught to put our heads down, figure it out ourselves, and never complain. We were the latchkey kids who learned early that “no one is coming to save you.” We wear our 60-hour workweeks like badges of honor because that’s what success was supposed to look like.

Millennials were taught that passion should fuel everything—that if they just found work they loved, it wouldn’t feel like work. So they hustle for purpose, often burning out while chasing meaningful impact.

Gen Z is rebelling entirely, embracing “quiet quitting” and work-life boundaries from day one. They’ve watched previous generations sacrifice health and happiness at the altar of productivity—and they’re saying “no thanks.”

And you know what?

Each generation has something to teach us about this dangerous advice.

What if Gen X’s resilience could be channeled into smarter systems instead of longer hours?

What if the Millennial search for meaning could happen within healthy boundaries?

What if Gen Z’s insistence on work-life integration is actually the wisest approach of all?

The “Head Up, Work Smarter” Revolution

What if instead of putting your head down, you lifted it up? What would you see?

The truth is, sustainable success doesn’t come from working yourself into exhaustion.

It comes from:

Energy management, not just time management. As I’ve shared before, “You can manage your time perfectly and still feel completely drained. That’s not a time management problem. That’s an energy crisis.”

Creating space for insight. Your best solutions often come in the quiet moments, not during the hustle.

Leading from where you are. Remember, “Leadership isn’t about waiting for the right title, the perfect moment, or someone else’s permission. It’s about embracing your power to influence positive change right where you are right now.”

Embracing ‘good enough’ when perfect is the enemy of done. As I’ve told clients for years, “What if the most perfect outcome isn’t about being perfect at all?”

You Get To Work Differently

Consider this your official permission to:

  • Close your laptop at a reasonable hour
  • Take that walk in the middle of your workday
  • Delegate the tasks that drain you
  • Say “no” to opportunities that don’t align with your vision
  • Celebrate progress over perfection
  • Trust that rest is productive

One Question That Changes Everything

Before you “put your head down and work harder” on any task, ask yourself:

“Is more effort what’s truly needed here, or is it something else?”

Here’s what you really need:

  • Clarity
  • Connection
  • Creativity
  • Courage
  • Calm

None of which come from grinding yourself down.

Your “Head Up” Challenge This Week

  1. Identify ONE area where you’ve been applying the “head down, work harder” approach
  2. Schedule 30 minutes with your head UP – take a walk, look out the window, or sit in silence
  3. Ask yourself: “What new perspective will I gain by looking up instead of down?”

Remember, the view from up here is so much better than the ground. And your best ideas, connections, and joy are waiting for you to lift your head up and notice them.

XOXO
