Discover how measuring backward could unlock your happiness and success.
Have you ever felt like you’re running on a treadmill, always moving but never quite reaching your destination?
I’ve been there, and I’ve got something game-changing to share with you today.
In my journey as a coach, I’ve discovered three powerful mindset shifts that have transformed my clients’ entire approach to life. These insights come from the brilliant book ‘The Gap and The Gain’ by Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy, and I’m excited to break them down for you in a way that you can apply immediately to create more fulfillment and success in all areas of your life.
Measure Backward, Not Forward
You know that feeling when you’ve achieved a long-time goal, only to immediately start worrying about the next big challenge? That’s living in ‘the Gap.’ Instead, try this: take a moment to appreciate how much you’ve grown and all you’ve overcome to get here. That’s ‘the Gain.’
Here’s the deal: When we always measure ourselves against some ideal future (the Gap), we set ourselves up for perpetual disappointment. But when we measure backward and appreciate our progress, that’s where the magic happens.
Try This: At the end of each day, jot down three things you’ve accomplished or improved, no matter how small. It’s not about comparing yourself to others or some perfect version of you – it’s about recognizing your own growth.
Happiness Is a Choice, Not a Result
Here’s a truth bomb: happiness isn’t waiting for you at the end of some arbitrary finish line. It’s right here, right now, if you choose to see it.
When we’re stuck in the Gap mentality, we think, “I’ll be happy when…” But living in the Gain? It’s about finding joy in the journey, celebrating the small wins, and choosing happiness in the present moment.
Challenge: For the next week, start your day by choosing to be happy—not because everything’s perfect, but because you’re making progress, learning, and growing. Watch how this shifts your entire approach to work and life.
Your Past Is Your Intellectual Property
Now, this one’s a game-changer. Every experience you’ve had, every challenge you’ve faced – it’s all valuable. It’s not just stuff that happened to you; it’s a goldmine of wisdom that you can use to propel yourself forward.
Instead of seeing past struggles as setbacks, reframe them as lessons that have equipped you with unique insights and strengths.
Reflect On This: What’s a past challenge that felt like a failure at the time? How has it actually prepared you for where you are now? What wisdom did you gain that you can apply to your current goals?
Here’s the beauty of embracing these concepts: they apply to every aspect of your life. Whether you’re running a business, nurturing relationships, or working on personal growth, shifting from the Gap to the Gain mentality can transform your experience.
Remember, it’s not about ignoring your goals or becoming complacent. It’s about appreciating your progress, finding joy in the journey, and using your unique experiences to fuel your growth.
You’ve got this, and I’m here cheering you on every step of the way. Let’s keep growing, learning, and celebrating our gains together.
