🫥Stop Pretending. (I Know You’re Tired.)

BEHIND THE MASK

The Real Magic of Being Yourself

Hey friend!

Can we talk about masks for a minute? And no, I’m not just talking about the spooky Halloween kind!

The Masks We Wear Daily

Ever catch yourself nodding and smiling when someone asks how you’re doing, while inside you’re juggling a million things? That’s the mask I’m talking about. The one we’ve gotten so good at wearing, we sometimes forget it’s there.

You might recognize these:

  • The “I’ve got it all handled” mask (while your to-do list keeps growing)
  • The “I don’t need help” mask (even when you’re overwhelmed)
  • The “everything’s perfect” mask (when life feels anything but perfect)
  • The “I’m fine” mask (when you really need someone to lean on)

The Real Cost of Keeping Up Appearances

Last week, I caught myself in full mask mode. Deadlines closing in, commitments piling up, and there I was, telling everyone, “I’m fine!” while drinking from a firehose.

Sound familiar?

The truth is, maintaining these masks costs more than we realize:

  • Sleepless nights planning how to “handle it all”
  • Missed connections because we’re too “busy” being perfect
  • Exhaustion from maintaining an image that’s not even making us happy

Why We Stay Hidden

Here’s what I’ve learned: we don’t wear these masks because we’re trying to deceive anyone. We wear them because somewhere along the way, we learned that’s what “having it all together” or “success” looks like.

Brain Boost: Ask yourself: “If I let go of being perfect in one area of my life today, what might become possible?”

The Freedom on the Other Side

When I finally started letting my guard down (yes, even as a coach!), something amazing happened:

  • My relationships grew because they were real
  • Solutions appeared because I could actually ask for help (go figure)
  • I slept better (turns out perfection and “being fine” is pretty exhausting!)
  • Others felt safe to be real with me, too

Your Permission Slip for Real Life

Starting today, you have permission to:

  • Say “This is harder than I expected”
  • Ask for help before you’re drowning
  • Take that break without the guilt trip
  • Admit you don’t have all the answers
  • Let others see you figure things out in real-time

Your Challenge This Week

Let’s make this super simple.

Choose ONE mask to let slip (just a little):

  1. In a meeting, share one challenge you’re working through
  2. Tell a friend you could use some support (specific is better!)
  3. Let your family see you take a break without apologizing

PRO TIP: Start with people you trust. Baby steps lead to big changes.

The Sweet Rewards

When you dare to be real, you discover:

  • Problems are easier to solve when you’re not hiding them
  • Your relationships deepen (turns out people like real humans!)
  • Your energy goes to what matters, not keeping up appearances
  • You become a permission slip for others to be real too

Remember: The right people will appreciate the real you. And those who don’t? They’re probably too busy managing their own masks to notice!
